Alabama 811 is a communication network established to provide a toll
free telephone number for excavators, contractors, utility companies and
the general public to call as required in Alabama Act 94-487 to request
a location to be marked for underground lines. The members who join the
Center to receive notice of these future excavations fund the Center.
Membership in the Alabama 811 is obtained by the following:

Completion of the Membership Application (click to download in Word file format)

Executing
two copies of the legal contract utilized by the Center. This requires
a certificate of insurance or proof that the prospective member is
self-insured for up to the amount outlined in the Insurance

Requirements
(contracts will be sent after Membership Application is received)

Indicating
the service area
-
Establishing
communications with the Center
Memberships costs are based on the number of locate requests the company
receives and communication costs.
The following are the guidelines and options for how Alabama 811
needs the information indicating the service area:

Providing shape files of service area or facilities

Highlight
the location or route of the underground facilities on the map(s)
if shapefiles are not available.(This
is the most suitable method for facilities, which cross several counties
such as fiber optic and gas transmission lines)

Alabama 811 will dispatch locate requests for any service area for which
notification is wished to be received. After we receive the database
information, we will input this information into our computer system
and send a map printout for verification. A member received notification
for an excavation site if the site location “conflicts”
with their designated service area.
